Workshop: Weimar/2019
Falten werfen was a 10-day workshop for an interdisciplinary group of students working on the theme of drapery.
Textiles are omnipresent, veiling and unveiling essential components of our cultural life. Textile as a material: an interwoven, knotted something, always exists in relation to the space surrounding it. Fabric can lie flat on the floor or crumpled up in the corner. Fabric can warm and hide me. Fabric can protect, decorate and cover. At the same time, textile exists in a constant ambiguity: it covers what is not meant to be seen and marks what lies underneath/behind it, delineates forms, allows them to be guessed at but never fully comprehended.
The workshop was designed as a constant workflow of producing experiments in changing collaborative group settings, alternating with moderated feedback sessions. The aim of the work was not a fixed product, but a stabilization of the processuality, accompanied by an ongoing, joint practice of reflection. The work is to be understood as a translation of the metaphorical fold, which can only emerge in movement and collaborative interstices and is constituted in these interstices.
